states that in Senegal the mortality rate for children under
5 years is about 40 per 1000 live births.
In comparison with the Netherlands: here this number lies at 4
per 1000 live births.
The average life expectancy at birth is 62.5 years.

Healthcare in the Casamance region

In the villages of Kafoutine and Diouloulou
in the Casamance region there is a small
hospital of which the Obstetrics clinic is part.
Both also have a function for the
inhabitants of the surrounding villages.


Diouloulou

The hospital in Diouloulou has
in a regional function
in the Diouloulou district which contains
21 surrounding villages.
More complex cases,
prenatal care and childbirth
are diverted to the
hospital of Diouloulou.


Kafountine

The hospital of Kafountine
provides basic care for 5 surrounding villages
(approximately 15,000 inhabitants)
and these villages
do not have their own health service.


Ziguinchor

The regional capital of the Casamance,
Ziguinchor, has a fully-equiped hospital.
That is more than two hours away
on a moderately paved road.
It is generally difficult to reach,
especially during the rainy season.
